Executive/Managerial Career Development in Good Times and Bad Times

Hope and Strategy

In Alan Axelrod’s book “Gandhi CEO – 14 Principles to Guide & Inspire Modern Leaders”, there is an interesting concept about hope. Quoting Gandhi “I must not contemplate darkness before it stares me in the face.”

Axelrod goes on to talk about the importance of “hope.” Yes, it is folly to avoid real problems and issues; however, it is also folly to focus just on problems without weaving in some hope.

The best combination is facing reality with strategy and hope. What does that mean for you as a job seeker? Face the reality of job loss or your unhappiness in your current position. Then gather your past work experience and strengths. Focus on what you enjoyed about your job and imagine finding that same joy again in your next job. Strategy includes facing any fear you may have about change, and start to build a strategy for gaining new employment. Gandhi accomplished the seeming impossible, so can you.

Start with reflecting on your past job history. Gather your job duties, your accomplishments, and your continuing education and write an attention-grabbing resume.

This is not the time for a run of the mill template resume. You must stand out. You have the experience; you have the credentials, make them shine.

Many people feel intimidated with the process and frankly it is not easy. Consider finding a professional to help you with the right words, the right formatting to help you highlight your skills, talents and abilities.
