Innovators

What makes innovators different from everyone else? Researchers discovered one main difference between active innovators and every other person is their inquisitiveness. We all have the innate ability to be inquisitive and innovative.

An interesting discovery is that innovative people grew up in environments that fostered innovation.  Behaviors were encouraged such as freedom to ask questions, investigative learning from trial and error, studious observation and exchange of ideas. Many adult innovators attended schools like Montessori or Waldorf.

The good news is that we can foster innovative behaviors in our employees and ourselves. When you are thinking about a problem and want to break ground in a new way, spend some time observing all the relevant facts of the issue at hand. Look for new opportunities to deliver new outcomes by questioning. Start asking questions like  - “What if?”, “Why not?”, or “Why”? Challenge the status quo.

  • Questions help reveal new avenues for answers to arrive, allowing for new inventive connections. Stalemates break down.

  • Observe details, particularly the details of people’s behavior, listen to others and sometimes the answer you are looking for is delivered in a surprising way.

  • Innovators enjoy networking and learning from smart people, including smart people in other fields.

  • Research, try new things, and investigate new worlds. Innovators stick with the problem until the answer arrives.

What new and different ideas can you explore today? I wonder what perfect solution is waiting to arrive on your doorstep.
