Do You Ever Feel Like an Imposter?

Find Your Authenticity - Lose that Imposter Feeling

Feeling like an imposter can hit just about anyone from any walk of life or position in the hierarchy of business and life. Feeling like an imposter can feel like swampy feelings of self-doubt that drains your energy. That voice has many varieties on the theme “Who do you think you are?” Have you ever heard that voice? I know I have.

This critical voice, can take you down for the count. Yet, it can serve a purpose. Who do you think you are to do such and such, or want such and such? These critical messages can actually turn into allies.

You may ask yourself - How? The answer may surprise you - By exploring the question "Who are you?" The more you explore and find your personal and unique answers to  that question the more likely you will feel at home in your own skin. Turn that veiled criticism into your ally.

Let’s explore some ways to find your way home, to your authentic self. Confront that voice that accuses you of being an imposter and assails you with “who do you think you are?” – And turn that question into your reliable guide: a guide to your authentic self where you will find your greatest fulfillment. Neutralize the sting and poison of the critical implication of “who do you think you are?” Turn it into your tool for self-discovery.

You can start in a place many of us want to avoid – your feelings. Did you ever play the hot and cold game -The game where a friend hid something and then you had to find it? Your friend could only say hot, cold, warmer etc.

That game works for you in your self-discovery process too. When you are close to something that your inner wisdom knows is good for you – you will feel “hot” feelings. What are “hot” feelings? They are feelings of joy, fulfillment, and a place where time stops. You lose track of time because you are so engrossed in this activity. Cold feelings are sometimes tricky, because your mind can trick you with a wide assortment of “shoulds.” For example, in dating, you may meet someone new.  He or she meets all your “right” criteria, but something just leaves you “cold.” You may question that cold feeling. Your well-meaning friends or family may tell you that you are too picky, or any number of things that only confuse your inner compass.

Trust your feelings. They are your second wise brain. Yes, logic is good, but it is even better when paired with your emotional gut reaction.

When you follow your logic and your feelings - your feeling of being an imposter is likely to disappear, because you are following your inner truth.

Go ahead - next time that swampy imposter feeling arrives, explore and see if maybe, just maybe, you’re not following your heart. Explore what you think and how you feel. Look at your objective truth and see if maybe that voice is really an ally looking out for your best interest.
