What is Your Likeability Quotient?
How Can You Master Your Interview Process?
By Sandy Prock M.Ed, JCTC, Co-Owner of
I have talked about this subject before. However, this subject is worth talking about again.
How do you surpass your competition in the interview? There are many factors. One essential winning quotient in your interview process is your “likability.” When push comes to shove, people like to hire people they like. Whom would you hire if two candidates had similar qualifications – the person you connected with and liked or the one you did not? This is a two way street. Make sure your new job is a good fit for you and that you like your new employer too.
Consider the following ideas as you prepare for your interview. Sometimes when faced with an interview, nerves can take over and cloud your thinking and feelings. I hope these ideas give you a foundation to help you build your confidence. Interviewing, like all job search skills is a learned skill. Take your time to learn these skills. Master your interviewing skills. Master your job search process. Each step takes you closer to the job you want.
Practice answers to potential questions with a friend, or rehearse in your mind
To relax, try deep breathing
When appropriate smile - using your smile muscles increases your mood and the mood of the person with you
Remember, everyone you meet deserves your complete respect
When appropriate show how you saved your previous or current company money, time, or increased territory, sales, improved your job in any way, even if you think it is small, it is important. Yes. Those are your accomplishments; however, they also show how you helped your employers grow and how you contributed
Thank people in person for their time - Their time is valuable - Restate some of the positive things you talked about with your interviewer
Send a Thank You note to everyone you met in the interview process - Handwrite your Thank You notes - Use professional note cards - Write something that speaks directly to the person you talked with
Collect business cards and make sure you spell names correctly
Many of these things you already know. This is just a gentle reminder. It can be so easy to forget these things when you feel nervous or scared. Practice and relax as much as you can. Consider having fun as you look for your new job. Find a great match for you and your new employer.
Your resume, cover letter and other job search documents represent you. They must shine, just as you do! Keep moving forward. Trust the process.
