Congratulations, you landed your new job!
Now it is time to think about how you will spend your first days on the job. The most important thing to remember is that how you initially act and perform in your new job sets the precedent for how others will view you and interact with you in the future. This is where expectations begin. This is often a lasting impression, so make it a good one.
- Consider taking time to observe office politics.
- Beware of the office gossip, they can lead to trouble
- Observe who has the real power
- Observe official and unofficial expectations
- Observe others and find ways to work with them according to their personality style
- If someone is shy, go easy
- If someone is aggressive, stand tall
- If someone is detail oriented, give details
- If someone is a big picture person, give the big picture
- You get the idea.
- This is not manipulation, it is emotional IQ – the fundamentals of getting along with others in the best way possible
- Observe the dress code and dress according to the company standard
- Find out company policy
- Arrive and leave on time – unless it is standard to work until the job is done
- Find a mentor, someone who knows the ropes and is successful in their position
These are a few ideas to ponder as you start your new position.
Enjoy your new opportunity and prosper!
Bob and I wish you the best.
